The general theory of explosion venting systems is a simple one. When an explosion occurs in an industrial vessel, the resulting pressure can cause the vessel to rupture in a catastrophic 
failure. If, however, a planned pathway allows expanding gases to escape to the atmosphere, the integrity of the vessel will remain intact. Strategically placed explosion vents provide just such a pathway. The vent openings are sized to allow the expanding gases to be vented at a rapid rate so as to limit the internal pressure in the vessel.
Not all venting needs to allow flames into the atmosphere. Shown at right is a flameless vent for use in applications where it is unacceptable to allow open flames in the work area. In some processes a sanitary design requiring vacuum service is required. Special vents, as shown at left, are available for cyclic or pulsing duty.
